Dealing With Your Spouse’s Addictions
No matter what kind of addiction your spouse may be dealing with, you won’t be able to figure out how to save your marriage until the other party is willing to take responsibility for his or her actions. Even still, there are steps you can take to help your loved one see the error of his or her ways. Getting them enrolled in a treatment program, or even arranging an intervention with close friends and family members may help your spouse to see the light of day. Brace yourself, as even after your loved one begins the long, hard road to recovery, there will still be relapses, untruths, stealing and perhaps, betrayal, to deal with. You might be asking yourself, ‘is it even worth it to learn how to save my marriage?’ If you can see even the slightest semblance of the person you married, the answer is an overwhelming yes.
Most people don’t become addicts overnight, but is it entirely possible to realize at once that your spouse is battling an addiction. Many addicts are able to hide their secrets for years, and yet still be in complete denial about having a problem with drugs, alcohol or gambling. To make matters even more difficult, you may find that your spouse has a primary as well as a secondary addiction. Some drug addicts may substitute alcohol for hard drugs when they can’t get a hold of them, while others will engage in high-risk activities for the temporary adrenaline surge. While working on your marriage should be a priority, remember to always protect yourself first, especially if your loved one is using hypodermic needles, engaging in unprotected sex with others or committing crimes to support their addiction. Joint counseling for marriages will be a long time away; at least until your spouse can get their act together, but you can still see a martial therapist on your own.
